ChatGPT Business vs Enterprise: pricing and controls.
What each plan costs, what Enterprise adds, and when a New Zealand or Australian business should move up. Every figure is OpenAI's own, read from its pricing page and enterprise privacy page on 18 October 2026.
The short answer
ChatGPT Business costs NZ$33 per standard seat per month billed annually (NZ$41 monthly) and NZ$165 per premium seat (NZ$205 monthly), for teams of 2 to 200. ChatGPT Enterprise has no list price: OpenAI quotes it through sales, with credit-based or token-based pricing. Both include SAML single sign-on, an analytics dashboard, skills and no training on your data by default; Enterprise adds SCIM, role-based access, the Compliance API, key management, IP allowlisting, custom retention and data residency in ten regions including Australia. Stay on Business until one of those controls, or a 201st person, becomes a requirement. Prices are as OpenAI's pricing page shows them to a New Zealand visitor on 18 October 2026.
What each plan costs
Per person per month, in New Zealand dollars, as OpenAI lists them to a New Zealand visitor. The two plans are priced on different models: Business is a fixed price per seat, Enterprise is negotiated and can be metered on credits or tokens.
| Plan | Seat | Billed annually | Billed monthly | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business | Standard seat | NZ$33 | NZ$41 | For teams of 2 to 200. Seat types can be mixed. |
| Business | Premium seat | NZ$165 | NZ$205 | Five times the usage of a standard seat, with no five-hour limit. |
| Enterprise | Custom | Through sales | Annual only | No list price. Credit-based and token-based pricing are both offered. |
Both plans include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, on desktop, web and mobile, with the same list of models; both can buy credits for more access. The model differences OpenAI lists are the context window, where Enterprise takes longer inputs and larger files, and response times. Past that, the difference is in the controls and how you pay, not in what people can do. OpenAI also lists a nonprofit discount of up to 75% on either plan through its sales team.

| Paying | Business | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Billing cycle | Monthly or annual | Annual |
| Pay by | Any major credit card | Invoicing through OpenAI's sales team |
| Also through sales | Not offered | Volume discounts, SLAs, custom legal terms (eligible customers) |
On retention, OpenAI's enterprise privacy page says workspace admins on both plans control how long conversations are kept, and deleted conversations leave its systems within 30 days. On Business, admins can view, export and delete members' conversations; on Enterprise, they reach an audit log through the Compliance API. If that audit log is the reason you are looking at Enterprise, it is usually part of a wider question about who is accountable for what AI does in the business. That is what AI governance covers, and it applies on either plan.
What actually decides it
Four questions. If none of them forces Enterprise, Business is the simpler and more predictable bill.
Will you pass 200 people on ChatGPT?
Business is listed for teams of 2 to 200. Past that, Enterprise is the plan whatever else is true.
What will your security review ask for?
Business already has SAML single sign-on, domain verification, admin roles and an analytics dashboard, which is what most reviews ask for first. If yours needs SCIM provisioning, role-based access, the Compliance API, IP allowlisting, key management or custom retention, those are Enterprise only.
Does the data have to stay in Australia?
Data residency is Enterprise only. OpenAI lists ten regions, Australia among them. There is no New Zealand region, so a New Zealand business that needs data onshore in this part of the world is choosing Australia.
How does finance want to pay?
Business runs on a credit card, monthly or annually. Enterprise is annual, priced by OpenAI's sales team, and is the plan for invoicing and volume discounts.
How we would start
The plan matters less than what goes on the seats
For most teams under 200, the answer is Business: standard seats for nearly everyone, premium seats for the few people who hit limits, and a move to Enterprise when a control or Australian data residency becomes a requirement rather than a nice-to-have. You do not need a firm like ours to pick a plan; this page should be enough.
Where we earn our fee is after the purchase. Seats that nobody has built anything for get opened twice and forgotten. A ChatGPT rollout puts skills for each role on every seat, connects ChatGPT to the systems you already run, and times the jobs it is meant to speed up against your own week-one baseline. One thing to know before you choose: the deepest usage data OpenAI offers, the Compliance API Logs Platform, is Enterprise only, so on Business that measurement leans on the analytics dashboard and on timing the work itself. Whichever you choose, can you evidence how it is used?
Business or Enterprise decides which controls OpenAI gives you. It does not decide whether your business can evidence how ChatGPT is governed, which is what an ISO/IEC 42001 auditor or a client's due diligence will ask. Score yourself against the clauses in five minutes, no sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
How much does ChatGPT Business cost in New Zealand?
OpenAI's pricing page, viewed from New Zealand, lists a ChatGPT Business standard seat at NZ$33 per person per month billed annually, or NZ$41 billed monthly. A premium seat, with five times the usage of a standard seat and no five-hour limit, is NZ$165 a month billed annually or NZ$205 monthly. Seat types can be mixed. Checked on 18 October 2026.
How much does ChatGPT Enterprise cost?
OpenAI does not publish an Enterprise price. Its pricing page lists Enterprise as custom pricing through its sales team, with credit-based and token-based pricing available, annual plans, invoicing and volume discounts. Any per-seat figure you read elsewhere is a negotiated quote, not a list price. Checked on 18 October 2026.
How many people can be on ChatGPT Business?
OpenAI lists Business for teams of 2 to 200 employees. Past that, or when you need a control Business does not have, Enterprise is the plan.
What does ChatGPT Enterprise have that Business does not?
On OpenAI's comparison table: SCIM provisioning, Enterprise Key Management, role-based access controls, granular GPT controls and group permissions, the Compliance API Logs Platform, IP allowlisting, data residency in ten regions including Australia, custom data retention policies, Intune for iOS, a branded workspace, a global admin console, a connector registry and workspace connections, plus enhanced support, dedicated onboarding, account management and a custom security review.
Does ChatGPT Business include single sign-on?
Yes. OpenAI lists SAML single sign-on, MFA, domain verification, an admin console, admin roles, bulk member management, unified billing, basic user analytics and an analytics dashboard on Business, along with connectors to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365.
Does OpenAI train on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise data?
Not by default. OpenAI's enterprise privacy page says it does not train its models on business data from ChatGPT Business or Enterprise unless you explicitly opt in, for example through its feedback mechanisms. It also offers a Data Processing Addendum for both plans.
Can ChatGPT keep our data in Australia or New Zealand?
On ChatGPT Enterprise, yes for Australia: OpenAI lists data residency in the US, EU, UK, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, India, Australia and the UAE. Business does not include data residency, and there is no New Zealand region in the list. Checked on 18 October 2026.
How long does ChatGPT keep our conversations?
OpenAI's enterprise privacy page says workspace admins on both Business and Enterprise control how long data is retained, and deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days, with exceptions such as a legal requirement to keep them. Custom data retention policies are listed as an Enterprise feature. On Business, workspace admins can view, export and delete members' conversations; on Enterprise, admins reach an audit log through the Compliance API.
When should a business move from Business to Enterprise?
When it passes 200 people, when a security review asks for SCIM, role-based access, audit logs through the Compliance API, IP allowlisting or key management, when data has to stay in Australia, or when finance needs to pay on invoice. Until one of those is a real requirement, Business is the simpler bill.
Already on a plan and not sure it is being used?
In a short call we will look at who is actually using ChatGPT, for what, whether your seats are the right type, and which jobs are worth timing first.
