Microsoft Copilot vs Claude for business.
Claude already runs inside Copilot, so this is no longer an either/or. What each costs in New Zealand and Australia, what Claude inside Copilot does and does not give you, and where each is the better buy. Figures are read from Microsoft's and Anthropic's own pages on 1 October 2026.
The short answer
Microsoft Copilot and Claude are no longer rivals at the model level: Claude models run inside Copilot by default for most commercial Microsoft 365 tenants. The choice is between Microsoft's product and Claude's own. Copilot is the better buy when your work lives in Outlook, Teams and SharePoint, and Copilot Chat costs nothing extra on eligible plans. Claude is the better buy when work runs through systems outside Microsoft, when people build their own tools and skills, or when you need use measured per person. Copilot Business is NZ$34 or AU$31.40 per user per month on an annual plan; Claude Team is US$20. Many businesses run Copilot Chat for everyone and Claude for their heaviest users. Checked on 1 October 2026.
What Copilot and Claude cost
Microsoft prices Copilot in local currency; Anthropic lists Claude in US dollars only. Copilot is an add-on to a Microsoft 365 licence; Claude is a standalone seat.
| Product | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot Chat | No extra cost | Included with eligible Microsoft 365 plans for people signed in with a work account. |
| Microsoft Copilot Business | NZ$34 / AU$31.40 / US$21 | Per user per month, annual plan, excluding GST. First-year promotion NZ$29.14 / AU$26.91 / US$18 on offers made by 31 December 2026. Add-on to a Microsoft 365 business plan. |
| Microsoft Copilot (enterprise) | US$30 | Per user per month paid yearly, for Microsoft 365 enterprise plans. |
| Claude Team | US$20 annually / US$25 monthly | Per standard seat per month, excluding tax. Premium seats US$100 / US$125. Needs nothing underneath it. |
Microsoft renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot to Microsoft Copilot in September 2026; some of its pricing pages still use the old name. For the Claude plans in depth, see Claude Team vs Enterprise.
Claude inside Copilot: what it means
Most Copilot vs Claude comparisons were written before this was true. From Microsoft's own documentation:
- Anthropic is a Microsoft AI subprocessor, so Claude inside Copilot runs under Microsoft's product terms and data protection addendum.
- Claude models are on by default for most commercial tenants (off by default in the EU, EFTA and UK).
- Claude is used in Copilot, Researcher, Copilot Studio and Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Claude Opus 5 joined the model picker in July 2026.
- Anthropic's models are currently excluded from Microsoft's in-country processing commitments.
So a Microsoft 365 business may already be using Claude without having bought it. What it gets is Claude's models working on Microsoft content through Microsoft's interface. What it does not get is the rest of Claude: Claude Code, skills deployed across the organisation, connectors to systems outside Microsoft, and usage telemetry it can export and measure.
Where each one wins
We deploy Claude, so read the right column knowing that. The left column is there because for plenty of Microsoft businesses, Copilot is the right first step.
- Your work lives in Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and Excel. Copilot works inside your Microsoft tenant with the permissions you already have.
- You want to start at no extra cost. Copilot Chat comes with eligible Microsoft 365 plans, and it is a sensible first step for everyone.
- One vendor, one contract, one admin centre. Your IT team already manages Microsoft; Copilot adds no new identity or billing system.
- You want Claude's models without a second vendor. They are already in Copilot, under Microsoft's terms.
- Your work runs through systems outside Microsoft: accounting, ecommerce, CRM, industry software. Claude's connectors reach them; Copilot is strongest inside Microsoft 365.
- People build their own tools. Claude Code is on every Claude seat, and skills can be written once and deployed to every role.
- You want the new capability first. Microsoft's Copilot Cowork is built on the technology behind Claude's own Cowork, which reached Claude users first.
- You want to measure use per person. Claude exports usage telemetry over OpenTelemetry, which tells you who uses it, for what, and whether it is paying off.
What actually decides it
Four questions. The answer is often both, bought on purpose rather than by accident.
Is your work inside Microsoft 365, or around it?
If most of a working day is Outlook, Teams and SharePoint, Copilot has the advantage of already being there. If the systems that matter are Xero, Shopify, a CRM or your own industry software, Claude connects to where the work actually is.
Does data have to be processed in Australia?
Microsoft has committed to in-country processing for Copilot in Australia by the end of 2026, but not for the Claude models inside it, and not in New Zealand. If every request must stay onshore today, Claude through Amazon Bedrock in Sydney does it now.
Who are your heavy users?
Usage is never even. A few people will use AI for hours a day and most will use it for minutes. Price the heavy users on the tool they will get the most from, and give everyone else the one that is already included.
Is Copilot Chat already switched on?
If you have eligible Microsoft 365 licences, it probably is, and people may already be using it. Find out what it is being used for before buying anything; that usage is your requirements list.
How we would start
Copilot Chat for everyone, Claude where the work is heavy
For a Microsoft 365 business, the pattern we recommend most often is to switch on Copilot Chat for everyone, because it is already paid for, and put Claude seats on the people whose work is heaviest or runs outside Microsoft. Then measure both. The businesses that waste money on AI are rarely the ones that picked the wrong product; they are the ones with two products, no owner and no idea who uses either.
A Claude rollout puts skills for each role on every seat and connects Claude to your systems, including Microsoft 365. Where more than one assistant is in use, the AI Operating System and AI governance keep them under one set of controls. Where data must stay in Australia, we run Claude on private LLM infrastructure through Amazon Bedrock. Weighing ChatGPT as well? Read Claude vs ChatGPT for business.
Copilot vs Claude: frequently asked questions
Is Microsoft Copilot better than Claude for business?
It depends on where your work happens. If it lives in Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and Excel, Copilot works inside it with the permissions you already have. If your work runs through systems outside Microsoft, or you want an assistant your team builds its own tools and skills on, Claude is the stronger choice. Many businesses end up with Copilot Chat for everyone and Claude for the people who use AI hardest.
Does Microsoft Copilot use Claude?
Yes. Microsoft lists Anthropic as an AI subprocessor, and Claude models are on by default for most commercial Microsoft 365 tenants, used in Copilot, Researcher, Copilot Studio and Copilot in the Office apps. Claude Opus 5 was added to the model picker in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Copilot Chat in July 2026. Copilot also runs OpenAI's models, so it is not one or the other.
How much does Microsoft Copilot cost in New Zealand and Australia?
Copilot Business, the add-on for Microsoft 365 business plans, is NZ$34 or AU$31.40 per user per month on an annual plan, excluding GST, with a first-year promotion of NZ$29.14 or AU$26.91 on offers made up to 31 December 2026. In US dollars it is US$21, or US$18 on the promotion. It needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan underneath it. Copilot Chat comes at no extra cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans. Checked on 1 October 2026.
How much does Claude cost compared with Copilot?
Claude Team is US$20 per person per month billed annually, or US$25 monthly, and needs nothing underneath it. Microsoft's Copilot Business add-on is US$21 on an annual plan (US$18 on the current first-year promotion) on top of a Microsoft 365 licence you probably already pay for. Per seat they are close; the question is which one your people will actually use. Checked on 1 October 2026.
Is Claude inside Copilot the same as using Claude directly?
The model is the same; the product around it is not. Inside Copilot, Claude works on your Microsoft 365 content through Microsoft's interface, under Microsoft's terms. Claude's own app adds Claude Code, organisation-wide skills, connectors to non-Microsoft systems and usage telemetry you can export. Microsoft's Copilot Cowork is built on the technology behind Claude's own Cowork.
Can Copilot or Claude process our data in Australia?
Microsoft has committed to in-country processing for Copilot in Australia by the end of 2026, but its documentation currently excludes Anthropic's models from in-country processing commitments, so Claude inside Copilot does not inherit it. New Zealand is not on Microsoft's list. Claude through Amazon Bedrock in an Australian region is available now, and it is how we deploy Claude where every request must stay onshore.
What about Microsoft Copilot vs ChatGPT?
Copilot runs OpenAI's models alongside Anthropic's, so the real difference is the product: Copilot works inside Microsoft 365, ChatGPT is a separate app with its own workspace. Our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison covers ChatGPT's business plans in detail.
Is Microsoft 365 Copilot the same as Microsoft Copilot?
Yes. Microsoft renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot to Microsoft Copilot, and the free chat to Microsoft Copilot Chat, in September 2026. Some of Microsoft's own pricing pages still use the old names.
