# Agent Management Platform

Gartner formalised the category in 2026, and the label promptly got claimed by three neighbours that are not the thing: observability tools (which only see agents an engineer instrumented), gateways (which only see traffic routed through them), and platform control towers (which only govern their own vendor's agents).

### What is an agent management system?

An agent management system is the same thing as an agent management platform: one console that registers, monitors, governs and optimises every AI agent a business runs, across whichever vendors and harnesses those agents live in. The two names are used interchangeably in the market. What matters is not the label but whether the system can govern an agent it did not build, on a platform it does not own.

### Is an agent management platform the same as an agent control tower?

Usually not, despite the names. Most things sold as control towers are vendor control towers: they govern the agents built on that vendor's own stack and are blind to everything else. A genuine agent management platform is neutral, so an agent someone built in a different product still appears in the register and still obeys the same approval rules.

### Do I need one if I only run a few agents?

Not for the agents themselves, but usually for the ones you cannot see. Agent sprawl starts when individual teams stand up agents on whatever tool they already pay for, so the count a business believes it runs and the count it actually runs diverge quietly. The register is worth having at the point you stop being able to name every agent and who owns it.
